The Council is an organisation established by employers to promote and establish a system to improve the development of skills within various industries in the UK. Started in 2008 the it's a collective of employers and employer organisations that covers almost 90% of the UK workforce.
The Work of the Sector Skills Council
The Council, the SSC, seeks to improve through employer and employee involvement the skills of UK workers through training and development, and the stated aims are:
- To put the council at the centre of UK skills development
- To meet employers needs in standards and qualifications
- To make the Sector Skills Council the voice of the labour industry
- To improve communications between sectors and industries.
The Sector Skills Council operates UK wide in a variety of industries throughout England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales and in a variety of industries.
The Industries in Sector Skills
In the UK, various industries subscribe to improving skills within their industries and these are part of the Sector Skills Council. They cover a wide variety of industries and sectors including:
- Asset Skills for Property, Housing, Cleaning, Services, Facilities Management and Parking
- Cogent Skills for Science based industries Chemical and Pharmaceutical, Oil, Gas, Nuclear, Petroleum and Polymers
- Construction Skills
- Creative and Cultural Skills in Crafts, Music, Performing, Heritage, Design and Arts
- E skills in IT and Telecoms
And Skillset in TV, Film, Radio, Interactive Media, Advertising, Animation, Computer Games, Facilities, Photo Imaging, Publishing, Fashion and Textiles,
There are other industries that establish training, qualifications and experience within the Sector Skills Council within the Alliance and these include:
- The Energy and Utilities Industry
- Passenger Transport
- The Retail Motor Industry
- Community Learning, Education, FE, HE, Libraries, Work-based Learning, Archives and Information, Libraries and Training Providers
- Hospitality, Leisure, Travel and Tourism
- And Retail and more,
All these industries cover a great deal of the economic base of the UK economy and the industry base that contributes to it. The purpose of the Sector Skills Council is to provide a framework for training and qualifications within each industry. Skillset includes Radio as such an industry.
